Make Your Own Yummy Gelato At Home
Gelato is actually the Italian counterpart of ice cream. Be careful though since the Italian chefs will react to that kind of definition since they don’t consider gelato as the ice cream equivalent.
These 2 are the same but they have 3 big differences. For one, gelato has lesser butterfat so its better for those weight watchers out there. 2nd is because it’s heavier because there is no addition of air unlike the ice cream. The manufacturers of ice cream in the US add lots of air for this to double the size of their ice cream so the flavor is lessened.
Gelato’s much more flavorful because there’s not a bit of air added to it so the flavor is better in gelatos. The 3rd factor – gelato normally is served up a bit warmer as compared to the usual ice cream. It’s really not warm because it’s still being served cold but less cold than the usual ice cream so gelato melts quickly as compared to ice cream.
Italians would even say that gelato’s very rich in its flavor that you could savor it much more than your regular ice cream. These difference aren’t really observed by ordinary ice cream eaters so they don’t distinguish these 2 and sometimes even use them as substitutes of one another although they’re both very different. But if you’re not the discriminating eater then it won’t really matter.
To try and make some gelato in your home, here are a few simple steps for you to follow.
1. Already prepare ahead your supplies as well as ingredients. You’ll be needing desired flavorings, 4 pcs egg yolks (beaten slightly), few cups milk and 1 cup sugar. For your materials, you’ll be using candy thermometer, ice cream maker, whisk, mixer (electric), 1 bowl iced water and a big saucepan.
2. Next, melt 1/4 cup sugar into your saucepan. Don’t stir it up ’til it’s starting to melt then when it’s already melting, stir it continuously ’til all sugar is really melted. After everything is melted then dip it right into the bowl of iced water prior to going on the very next procedure.
3. Then, add in milk and make sure everything is incorporated well with your melted sugars. When done, add your flavorings. You have complete control over this since it would all depend on your personal preference. You could add in tiny pieces of milk/bittersweet chocolates, some powdered cocoa or other flavors like strawberries, vanilla, cheese and etc. Be sure your flavorings mix well with your sugar mix.
4. Using your mixer, blend together 3/4 cup sugar and yolks ’til mixture gets thick and smoothens up. Then mix this blend together with your 1st mixture.
5. Then, cook mixture ’til it reaches around 10 deg. F in the thermometer and don’t allow it to boil up. Stir well for 4 mins. Right after this is done, take it off from your heat then allow to get cool. This is now your very own gelato. Enjoy
